A downloadable Zine

I made my very first physical home-made zine for World Volleyball Day (July 7, 2025). It's about how Haikyuu!! by Haruichi Furudate and volleyball in general help me imagine the world I want to live in. Scroll down to see photos of how my zine turned out.

Make my zine your own!

Since I don't have the skills or patience to scan and edit the home-made zine into a PDF version that I would be happy with, I thought maybe I could pass the ball so to speak and provide the materials for people to put the zine together themselves if they want a copy. It took me so long to make a physical zine because I never felt creative or artistic enough, so my thought is that maybe doing this will help encourage someone to try putting together a home-made zine with less pressure since it is my zine they are cutting and taping and coloring. This seems like a fun idea especially since it's like a coloring book! A coloring zine if you will.

Here is how I made this zine:

1. Printed out the Uncolored Volleyball Marker Template PDF onto card stock

2. Colored in the volleyballs with markers

3. Printed out the Volleyball Text to Cut Out PDF on normal printer paper

4.  Cut out the text so that it fits inside the volleyball page I want to tape it on

5. Used double-sided tape to tape the text onto the volleyball page

6. Cut out the volleyball pages

7. Put the volleyball pages in order

8. Stapled the pages together on the top using a stapler intended for poster board since the pack of pages is thick

Of course, when you put yours together you can color the volleyballs however you like using markers, crayons, colored pencils, paint, etc. You can also arrange the text on the pages however you like with tape or glue.

NOTE: I made some changes to the PDFs after I finished my zine based on what I wasn't happy with. For example, I thought it might look better if the text was smaller, so i changed the font size and separated some text farther apart so there was more room to cut around it.

My Zine:

A small zine where the pages are circles decorated like volleyballs. the first page is a volleyball with earth colors. The zine text is typed, cut out, and taped on the volleyball. it says "How Haikyuu!! and Volleyball Help Me Envision the World I Want to Live In.

A page with a volleyball that has bright yellow, blue, and green colors. the text says "Mary Annaise Heglar: "To Build a Beautiful World, You First Have to Imagine It." Under that, the text says "This zine is just a few snapshots of how Haikyuu!! by Haruichi Furudate and volleyball in general help me imagine a beautiful world."

A page with a volleyball that has pink and purple colors. The text says "I want to live in a world with possibilities and adaptability, where there is a way to do or approach something differently that meet's one's needs if you look for it." Under that is a quote, "The ways volleyball can be played is limited only by imagination, and many fun alternatives have been invented." by Becky Schmidt in Volleyball: Steps to Success. Under that is another quote, "Oh? Why don't we lower the net, then?" by Nekomata Yasufumi

A page with a volleyball that has navy, orange, and gray colors from the Haikyuu!! manga's Karasuno team uniforms. The text says "'I'm here!' Hinata may be short but he has jumping talent and wild determination, and he's going to make sure the setter knows it." Ubder that, the text says "I want to live in a world of curiosity, where people can loudly express who they are and be where they want and need to be to live full, enriching lives. leading with curiosity means we want to know who is out there and what uniqueness they bring to the world."

A page with a volleyball that has blue, gray, and yellow colors. The text says "I want to live in a world of collaboration and connection like the global profession sport of volleyball in Haikyuu!! and in real life. Nations lend each other players, and players alternate between being teammates and rivals throughout their careers but still have fun.

A page with a volleyball that has bright orange, yellow, and pink colors. the text says "I want to live in a world where change (sought and made with respect to other people) isn't feared, and it is natural to learn what your faults are and work to become better. in the story of Haikyuu!!, it is very clear that there is a fear of NOT being able to continue to grow into the full potential of who you are meant to be."

A page with a volleyball that is purple and white. The text says "I want to live in a world where all kinds of relationships transcend time and place and don't have to be left behind just because communication or physical presence isn't constant. A world where people can move in different directions or between places to be where they can be happy and successful, and still be connected to each other.

A page with a volleyball that is blue and white. the text says "I want to live in a world where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential in anything from volleyball to cooking to being a stay-at-home parent."

A page of a volleyball that is black and yellow. The text says "I want to live in a world where every person matters and has their own story." Under that is a quote "No matter what other people may say, we are the protagonists of the world." by Akaashi Keiji in Haikyuu!!
